Bill & Brady

It isn’t easy making a big move after 85 years living in the same place. But a little baseball and a surprising new friend can go a long way toward making a person feel at home. I took the video footage of the interview, used some additional stock footage at the beginning and the end, and collected an assortment of images and broadcast recordings to round out this digital story.

Lessons from the Bees

I created this digital story in collaboration with Melanie Sanco, who owns a bee farm north of the Twin Cities. Melanie’s work as a beekeeper isn’t just a hobby; it’s environmental activism. To make this video, I interviewed Melanie, then created the narration from the transcript. I added original photos and video, as well as Creative Commons images from the web.

spin

We live at an historical moment when truth is too often eclipsed by lies and distortions. This digital story is a personal exploration of this moment, through the lens of my own career in publishing and teaching.

Nine lives

Sometimes we learn the most from the things we like the least. This is one of the first digital stories I made, with the help of StoryCenter, an organization that provides instruction in and support for digital storytelling all over the world. The video relies almost exclusively on family photos.

what is ethos?

Digital stories have the power to explain information effectively because they combine sound, image, and text--the viewer learns through multiple channels. Here's a 90-second digital story I made to explain the rhetorical concept of "ethos." It uses the human voice, still images, animation, archival video and text.
